Realdawg.com learned that the Huskies secured a commitment from Half Moon Bay, CA. K/P Dylan Williams last night.
We confirmed this today with a source close to Williams’ recruitment — he was offered as a preferred walk-on — but the Huskies definitely needed to get a quality kicker in the 2018 class.
“I never thought about Washington”, the 5-9, 160 lb. former soccer player told Realdawg.com, “I am so glad that Coach Gregory reached out to me.”
Williams, who hasn’t been to Seattle since he was a freshman in high school, said he looks forward to the opportunity and the chance to compete at Washington, “Coach Gregory told me that the spot is 100% open right now for competition”, he said. And he knows all about the woes that Washington went through this past season when Tristain Vizcaino fell into a slump.
“I know Tristan”, he said, “With a kicker, it’s so much about the mental part of it and you have to have that confidence.”
Williams, however, only missed two out of ten this past season for Half Moon High School in Northern California — a team that finished 14-1 overall.
“The two I missed were late in the game and we were out way ahead”, he laughed, noting that the concentration had withered with the big lead, but two out of ten is dang good; particularly for a guy who’s kicked two for 49 yards in live games, and a 60-yarder in practice.
As we said, Williams grew up playing soccer, but put the game away from football — where he played on special teams and also played wide receiver.
He’s been involved with the Sailer Kicking Camp, and even traveled to Florida for the Sailer Kicking Showcase. Williams has a huge leg — plus he has around a four second hang time on kick offs and usually kicks it behind the endzone.
“I just couldn’t pass it up”, he said of Washington’s preferred walk-on program, “I want to get up there contribute — I can’t wait.”
