Hawai’i (Punahou) kicker, Tim Horn tweeted out that he had been offered today by Washington after he spent the weekend in Seattle showing his skills at the kicking camp. The good news for Washington is that they are the first Pac-12 school to offer, and it’s no secret…they need a strong kicker.
“I kicked 62 yards in practice”, Horn, who’s 6-3, 200 told Realdawg.com, adding that last season he was only called upon three times for field goal duties at Punahou.
Nonetheless, Horn is an imposing kicker with a big leg and extremely strong ability to kick beyond the endzone on a consistent basis. Both on kickoffs and field goals, Horn is dependable and confident.
Washington has struggled in the field goal kicking department — that’s no secret. So bringing in a quality kicker with a big leg is crucial in this class. Bob Gregory and Keith Bhonapha have been Horn’s primary points of contact throughout the process, and they did let him know that he is a “missing piece.”
“Coach Gregory had watched me during spring (when he was in Hawai’i)”, Horn explained, “He wanted Coach Petersent to get a chance to see me kick so I went to the camp.”
Obviously, they liked what they saw, but also liked who they saw, “They told me that they were impressed with me as a person”, Horn said, adding that one of his strengths is his overall “work ethic” and how that translates onto the field.
The background on Horn is that he has been kicking since Pop Warner days, but he’s also played quarterback as well — so he began to be serious about perfecting the kicking craft during his freshman season.
He also took part in the Chris Sailer Kicking Camp where he was #3 overall.
As far as this offer goes, Horn said “It’s huge, it’s amazing”. He has offers from Hawai’i and Army as well, and is even set to go to Oregon and Cal for their upcoming camps, but Washington being the first to offer from the Power Five, that means the world to Horn.
“My family is ecstatic”, he said.
While in Seattle over the weekend, Horn did get to see the city of Seattle and tour the campus at Washington, and all areas checked off all the boxes for him, “Seattle is amazing”, he said, “The weather was sunny — but it wasn’t too hot. The facilities were world class.”
Right now he’s hoping to get back up to Seattle, but it’s early June — and he is hoping to make his decision before August. So this is something to keep a sharp eye on going forward.
Again, it’s no secret that Washington needs a solid kicker in the 2019 class. If a kicker is offered a full-ride, you just know he is something special.
Stay tuned…
