In a duel of unbeatens in front of a national audience, Washington’s Michael Penix threw two passes on the final drive of the game for UW.  He found Ja’Lynn Polk for a 35-yard pickup and followed that up with an 18-yard game-winning TD to Rome Odunze.  The Huskies were down 33-29 with 2:11 remaining in the game.  That’s 53 yards on two plays for the win.

As Heisman moments go, that’s about as clutch as one can be.

On Oregon’s final drive, Ducks’ QB Bo Nix had completions of 3, 5 12, 5, 1, 9 and 15 yards.  He drove the UO to Washington’s 25 where he missed on his final two passes setting up a potential game-tying field goal attempt.

Penix went 22 for 37 for 302 yards 4 TDs and an interception

Nix went 33 of 44 for 337 yards and 2 TDs.

Down in Los Angles reigning Heisman-winner Caleb Williams had a rough outing for USC against Notre Dame throwing 3 first half interceptions.  Williams finished with 199 yards a TD and the 3 interceptions as the Trojans lost badly to a 2-loss Fighting Irish team, 48-20.

Across the country, Drake Maye led his North Carolina Tar Heels to a big victory throwing for over 300 yards and 4 touchdowns.  UNC moved to 6-0 on the season.

Going into the weekend Penix was slightly ahead of Williams on many betting sights, but today’s performances likely made him a solid front runner.  Even ESPN’s Heisman Tracker had Penix in the lead two weeks ago, moving ahead of Williams.

With Washington’s 6-0 start the Washington senior has moved up from 7th on NFL.com to the presumptive front runner.

Gambling.com lists the current Heisman odds for 2023 as of October 11th.
