Grade report from Washington’s 38-3 win over Oregon

Here are my grades from Washington’s 38-3 win over Oregon…..

The Offense

That was more like the offense we have grown accustomed to seeing on Montlake, the last few years. Washington’s offense was responsible for 31 of UW’s 38 points. The Huskies gained 451 yards and averaged 7.8 yards per play. It was a balanced offense for UW, as they finished with 247 yards rushing and 204 yards passing.

After throwing the ball just 11 times last week against UCLA, Jake Browning completed 11-of-19 passes for 204 yards, an interception, and two touchdowns. Browning averaged 18.5 yards per completion, with a long of 47 yards to Dante Pettis for a TD.

Myles Gaskin had his second good game in-a-row, rushing for 123 yards and a TD. Gaskin averaged an impressive 7.2 yards per carry.

Washington’s offensive line played very well, going against an Oregon team that led the conference, with 30 sacks, coming into the game. UW’s offensive line allowed just one sack all night and opened up holes in the running game.

Overall, that was one of the best performances of the year for UW’s offense.

Grade: A

The Defense

Washington now has the No. 1 ranked total defense in the nation, allowing just 240.9 yards per game. The Huskies also have the No. 2 ranked scoring defense in the country, allowing 11.1 points per game.

Saturday night, the Huskies held the Ducks to three points. Oregon did run for 247 yards but passed for only for 31 yards.

Middle linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven once again led the Huskies with 10 tackles. The junior also had a forced fumble.

Vita Vea and Greg Gaines caused havoc in the backfield, combining for seven tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.

Overall, another stellar performance by the defense.

Grade: A

Special Teams

Special teams talk belongs to Dante Pettis. The senior recorded his NCAA breaking ninth punt return TD of his career Saturday night against the Ducks. Pettis took a second quarter punt 64 yards for a TD that gave the Huskies their first lead of the game. The play flipped the script of the game. It was Pettis’ fourth punt return TD this year.

Tristan Vizcaino made 1-of-2 field goals. Vizcaino’s miss came from 45 yards out.

Joel Whitford had a good night punting, pinning the Ducks inside their 20 yard line on both punts.

Anytime you can score a TD on special teams, it usually changes the game. And that’s what happened Saturday.
