Washington recently offered 6-foot-5, 265-pound, offensive guard Geirean Hatchett, out of Ferndale high school. Hatchett, a sophomore, was very “excited” about the offer from the Huskies.
“Getting the offer from UW felt great,” Hatchett told Realdawg.com. “I think High School players that want to play at the next level are just hoping for any school at any level to notice them. The hope is to play at the highest level you can and it is always special to have the “Big” school in your area take notice of you and in fact offer a scholarship. My family and I were very excited when Coach Petersen said he was offering.”
Hatchett was a big part in leading Ferndale to a 10-1 record and making the quarterfinals of the WIAA 3A State playoffs.
Washington offensive line coach Scott Huff has been Hatchett’s main recruiter and so far things have been going smoothly.
“Coach Huff seems really cool and down to earth,” Hatchett said. “He’s pretty easy to talk to and I know I enjoyed his coaching when I attended the UW lineman camp this past summer. I have also had the opportunity to speak with Taylor Mitchell a lot at all the games I attended. He is a Recruiting Specialist for UW Football and he’s been great. The day of the offer I made an unofficial visit to UW campus and got to sit down and talk at length with both Coach Huff and Coach Petersen in Coach Petersen’s office.”
Geirean Hatchett does have a few connections to Washignton. Hatchett said that both his aunt and uncle went to graduate school at Washington. Former Husky legend Jake Locker is also one of his coaches at Ferndale.
Washington is not the only big school to have offered the talented 2020 offensive guard. Oklahoma was the first to offer.
“Oklahoma was great, Hatchett said. “It was what most people might think it would be like. It is a national program and the atmosphere was great. I have extended family in the greater Oklahoma City / Norman area, so it made making the trip down there a lot easier. It would also be good to have family in the area if I ever did end up going to school there. I feel really fortunate not only to have two great schools offer me at such an early stage of my high school career, but also for the two schools to be close to family.”
Other schools are starting to show interest in Hatchett as well.
“I haven’t really talked to a lot of other schools lately,” Hatchett told Realdawg. “I am hearing that a couple other PAC-12 schools like Colorado and Utah have been asking about me through my coaches and we’ve had a little contact with TCU down in Fort worth. But that’s about it for now. I know schools are really trying to concentrate on bringing in their upperclassman recruits the last couple of weeks, especially with the new early signing period. I’m hoping other schools will start talking more to me in the near future.”
Don’t expect a decision anytime soon for Geirean Hatchett as the recruiting process is just beginning for the talented sophomore.
“No decision anytime soon,” Hatchett said about making a decision on a school. “I’m not quite half way through my Sophomore year in high school and have a couple years before anything can be finalized anyway. I want to take my time and see what all the options I might have end up being. There are a lot of schools I think I might be interested in, but I I won’t really know until I get to take a look at each one and get to know the coaches some. If no other schools offer I think I have two really great options as it is. I feel pretty lucky!”
