Fall Camp X-Factor: Could Defensive Back Dyson McCutcheon’s NFL Pedigree Help Key Washington Defense?

Fall Camp X-Factor: Could Defensive Back Dyson McCutcheon’s NFL Pedigree Help Key Washington Defense?

The 2024 season is now upon us as fall camp has begun for the Washington Huskies.

The men in Purple and Gold are fresh off of one of the most eventual seasons in the history of the program.

Less than a week after the national championship loss to Michigan, the program saw its coach and almost every starter leave either for the NFL or to other programs around the country.

While projecting this Husky team in 2024 might be tough for those in the national media, local writers have more of a pulse on who is coming back and who can have a major impact on the season.

One of those X/Factors is defensive back Dyson McCutcheon.

The 5-11, 182-pound junior is one of just a handful of commits left from the 2021 class brought in by former head coach Jimmy Lake.

As one might expect as the son of a former NFL player and coach (Daylon McCutcheon), the defensive back out of Bishop Amat in Los Angeles stood out as one of the most fundamentally sound defensive backs to come out of that class.

He possesses an elite cover profile who rarely was out of position to make a play.

Fast forward to 2023 saw McCutcheon continue to raise in the eyes of the previous coaching staff as he saw more and more time on the defense in higher leverage situations.

In all, McCutcheon played in seven games including USC, the Apple Cup, and the Pac-12 Championship game.

Mainly playing the Husky role for the previous staff, McCutcheon played in the middle of the field much like a slot corner who also was effective against the run.

This year there are new faces in the defensive backfield with the additions of Jordan Shaw and Ephesians Pyrsock along with major contributors from 2023 leaves a crowded room with a ton of talent.

However, when the coaching change occurred like so many other players, McCutcheon entered the portal before withdrawing his name once getting to know the new staff.

That withdrawal insinuates that this new staff has a plan to use the skillset McCutcheon bring to the field.

Three weeks into Spring Football he was singled out by new head coach Jedd Fisch as having a very good camp.

Watch for Dyson McCutcheon’s name in practice reports as the room shakes out throughout the course of fall camp. He could be a major x-factor in the defense retooling for another successful run.
