Elite 11 Competition: 4-Star QB Target Avery Johnson Shines/Struggles

Washington’s class of 2023 target Avery Johnson of Maize, Kansas, finished the first of 3 days at the Elite 11 QB camp competition at Redondo Beach, California.

Sandwiched between Purdue commit Rickie Collins and Cincinnati pledge Brady Drogosh, Johnson impressed Sports Illustrated’s scouts  with his athleticism.

“Considering Kanas State, Washington and Oregon after official visits to each in the month of June, Johnson’s long stride and athleticism showed when the passers were asked to move outside the pocket. Off-speed passes and second-level accuracy were strengths of the opening workout for perhaps the most gifted athlete among the competitors.” — SI All American John Garcia, Jr.

The 6-2, 170 pound will announce his school of choice July the 5th.

Here’s 247Sports’ observation of Johnson at the Elite 11, ranking him 8th:

“Tuesday and really threw the ball well. He has an athletic body, moves well and we’ve always liked his two-sport background as he’s a talented basketball player as well. His arm was very live and he can get a lot of juice on the ball in the pocket or rolling to his right or left.”

On3.com was on hand and had this to say about Johnson, putting him in at 7th overall.

”He stacks up with the best of the best as a passer on Tuesday night. The showing on day one is a continuation of the passing improvement we’ve seen from the Maize (Kan.) High standout this off-season. Johnson generated nice velocity on his passes and made some high-level throws while driving the ball down the seam and out to the boundary. There are some areas that he can continue to improve, but the progress he showed on Tuesday was very encouraging.”
