Elijah Molden selected 100th overall by the Tennessee Titans

Elijah Molden selected 100th overall by the Tennessee Titans

This pick might go down in 10 years as the steal of the draft. Elijah Molden is the hardest working, most technically sound defensive back in this class, and especially at pick 100, this can be considered a steal. Why? His versatility.

He can do a little bit of everything. He’ll play some safety, some outside corner, but mainly nickelback. In an interview he did with Realdawg.com back in February, he said that he’s been watching a lot of film of Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu. “I love the freedom that he’s given within the defense, and all the different responsibilities he could have on any given play,” Molden said.

He went on to say that a lot of NFL teams have been talking to him about using him in that same role, and it looks like the Titans will be no exception to that. They doubled down in the secondary after taking Caleb Farley in the first round, and adding Molden to this group will help the Titans take the next step towards contending in the AFC.

As if there weren’t enough comps to Mathieu already, the Kansas City Chiefs safety was also picked in the third round.

Fit Grade: A+

Here’s a little peek behind the scenes. I’m writing a template for every Husky that could be selected in the NFL Draft on Friday, April 23rd. Obviously, that template will be adjusted depending on where these players get picked. It doesn’t matter which of the 32 NFL teams Molden ends up on, I’m giving his fit grade an A today, and that’s not changing.

Molden is a high IQ player who works 24/7 at perfecting his craft. He’s a sure tackler, who can also be an elite player in coverage despite his size. Combine all that with his versatility, and there isn’t a bad fit for him, and if I were a betting man, I’d throw a lot of money on him becoming a Pro Bowler at the very least by his second or third year in the league.

The Titans needed help in the secondary, with Janoris Jenkins and Kevin Byard as the two best players in the secondary. Adding Farley and Molden will give them an immediate upgrade and add to a great pass rush that will have even more time to hit home now thanks to these additions.

Media scouts all seem to be in consensus that this is a giant mistake to let Molden stay on the board this long. The chip on his shoulder grew three sizes on Friday night, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if in 10 years, he’s considered the best defensive back in this draft class.
