Did DeBoer Tip His Hand on the Quarterback Pecking Order?

Did DeBoer Tip His Hand on the Quarterback Pecking Order?

With half of Spring Football in the books Washington’s once muddied quarterback situation is getting clearer.  It’s not necessarily what head coach Kalen Deboer said, but the way he said it.

“Its been a solid week for all three of them,” DeBoer said after Friday’s practice. “[Michael Penix] can make some things happen in tough situations, he can backpedal out of there and buy a split second. You can see his arm talent show in those situations in the way he’s able to get rid of the ball. [Dylan Morris] has been really consistent all spring, and Sam [Huard] had a great touchdown throw towards the end of practice today. All three guys have had their times when they showed up.”

Reading body language and facial expressions of the coach, RealDawg.com’s Roman Tomashoff came away thinking that DeBoer has a clear pecking order.

“During the open session the QB’s all looked great mechanically,” Tomashoff said.  “They all hit their spots in all of the zones of the field.”

All three scholarship quarterbacks practiced well Friday.  So well, in fact, that it was difficult to differentiate between the QBs because each receiver was coming out of their breaks at the same spot and the QBs were all delivering strikes with touch.

“There weren’t any noteworthy overthrows by the quarterbacks or drops by the receivers,” Tomashoff continued.  “No more ‘fast ball-only throws’.”

In the early session, before reporters were sequestered during live play, back shoulder throws were accurately placed, fades were able to be tracked by receivers, the ball was out quickly and precisely on screens.

“Once we were sequestered and the footballs began flying for real, we have to rely upon DeBoer’s words and ‘tells’,” Tomashoff said.  “It’s just the vibe that we were left to interpret, and that is that Penix has taken a slight lead over Morris and Huard.  Seven more opportunities for all of the QBs to shine.”
