In his first year as head coach Jedd Fisch has the Huskies bowling after defeating the UCLA Bruins 31-19. Fisch had to make up a ton of ground with how late in the cycle he was hired, yet has managed to get this team to at least a .500 record in the regular season.
The win on Friday night was even more meaningful with what it could mean for the years to come for the program. After Will Rogers threw his second interception in the third quarter Fisch and co. made the move to go with the freshman Demond Williams. At the point Williams entered the Huskies were up 14-13 in need of another defensive effort to bail out the offense.
The defense delivered a fumble recovery and the rest was history. Williams showed off his high ceiling with elite athleticism as he orchestrated three straight scoring drives to finish out the game. The 17 point second half was full of escapes from the pocket and safe throws for the young quarterback.
The win was monumental for the Husky program as they have secured the extra bowl practices and another game for the young roster to learn from. This also means the trip to Eugene against the #1 Ducks gives the coaching staff more options.
Jedd Fisch did not name a starter in his press conference this week and said he would take the bye week to decide. This very well could mean that Demond Williams will make his first Husky start in Autzen against a Ducks team looking to pull a Washington and go undefeated.
Williams brings an athleticism that Rogers does not have. His ability to escape a collapsing pocket could be key as the front seven of Oregon is playing at a high level.
Rogers, on the other hand, brings experience in playing in hostile environments, but has struggled away from Husky stadium this year.
The coaching staff will have to make the determination on who starts on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, but in my opinion Williams gives the better chance at an upset.
