Day 1 of Fall Camp 2021: Notes, Quotes, and Sights

The Huskies opened Fall Camp 2021 with Jimmy Lake stating that Dylan Morris “is our starter” and also some updates on players who have left the team.

At least for now.

Notes:

First day of fall camp, with a shortened season last year and a little less than a month until the first game everyone seemed excited as ever to be out on the field. It really felt like football season on a 70 degree day on the shores of lake Washington.

First thing that stands out about this team which is a huge difference from last year is all the returning depth. Seems like every position group has multiple guys who have started games in the past, as well as a talented group of young guys right on their heels fighting for playing time. On offense they are returning starters at every position.

Dylan Morris will be the starting QB and will lead a very deep group of running backs and pass catchers with the help of an extremely talented and experienced Oline. Adding experienced players like Giles Jackson and Jalynn Polk to a WR group returning Terrell Bynum, Rome Odunze, and Jalen McMillan will give Morris plenty of options to throw the ball to. Terrell Bynum, now wearing #1, made the first impact play of the fall beating Kyler Gordon for a long TD early in practice.

On defense, they are missing their number one pass rusher in Zion Tupuola Fetui due to injury but with his rehab going ahead of schedule he will be set to return at some point this season. They are also need to find a replacement for star corners Elijah Molden and Keith Taylor who are now in the NFL. Besides those three guys they are returning every starter from last season.

They have added some talented young guys who will fight for playing time as well as experienced transfer Bookie Radley Hiles who should get an opportunity to compete at nickel to start the season. Even with returning 19 starters from last years team one thing is for sure the competition for playing time should be intense all over the field. If anybody slips back or stops making plays somebody just as talented is waiting for the chance to take their spot.

Quotes:

While Lake said the door is still opened, he did state that Miki Ah You and Will Latu have left the team for “personal and family reasons”, without going into more detail than that.

Again, this was a little ambiguous because Lake followed up by saying the door was “definitely not closed”.

On a happier note, however, Lake said that Zion Tupoalu-Fetui is progressing “ahead of schedule” and will be seeing the field this fall, while also saying that “our opponents better be ready”.

For those thinking Sam Huard might be another Jake Browning, freshman starter, Lake assured that “Dylan Morris is our starter…that sounds solidified to me.”

However, there is still going to be opportunity for all at every position, including the quarterback position.
