He’s been on the road, but Cali quarterback, and big Husky target Ethan Garbers spoke to Realdawg.com this week about where he’s been, where he’s going next, and where things stand for Washington.
Garbers, who’s 6-3, 195 and holds 12 offers to date, was in Seattle again over the weekend, and now he’s going to be in Utah today, and then will check out Boise on Thursday and Colorado on Friday.
But one more school got involved this week, and that’s Georgia.
The Bulldogs offered Garbers on Monday and there is a connection for him; his father went to Georgia.
Garbers is definitely worthy of a fourth star at this point; his offers range from Washington, Miami, UCLA, Georgia, Colorado, Washington State…all big passing-game schools. But the best scouting report on Ethan came from someone who knows him and his game better than anyone: His older brother Chase.
To be honest, no one covered Chase more during his recruitment than Realdawg.com, and he was generous enough to talk to us again this week while getting ready for spring ball to start up at Cal, where he is slated to start in 2019.
“Ethan is a pro-style quarterback but he has a cannon of an arm”, the older Garbers said, “I don’t know where he got it because he’s only 16 years old”, he laughed, “He still has good speed though — but he’s not as fast as I am.”
Brotherly love and competitiveness abounds.
Chase had been heavily recruited by Washington and his family became well-familiar with Chris Petersen and how things are done at Washington, but at the end of the day he chose to stay closer to home and play for the Golden Bears. He did say he will be there for his younger brother, however, because he’s been through this process.
“My mom still loves Coach Pete”, Chase said.
Washington offered Ethan when the 2020 cycle began and he had already been to the UW campus before; the family has cousins in the Bellevue area, and then he was in Seattle again over the weekend.
“My relationship with Coach Hamdan is good”, Garbers said, “I could so see myself at Washington — they’re a great program with great coaches.”
But as we said above, the Huskies may be getting some more heady competition with Georgia.
The difference here between Washington and Georgia, however, is that Georgia has already offered 17 quarterbacks for 2020, and yet the Huskies only have one active offer out and that’s to Garbers. There continues to be a trend in the SEC to go after a lot of quarterbacks before even watching film because they’re getting smoked with the new transfer rules.
One thing we know about Washington is that they have been on Garbers a long time and have taken time to do all their homework.
Garbers said he will go check out Georgia in March at some point, but after this last trip to Washington, one has to wonder if things are on the verge of coming to a close.
“I’m just taking my time”, Garbers said, but you can bet that UW would love to get him on board early in order to build their offensive class around him.
Garbers hasn’t wasted any time taking in as many sights as he can, however, and doing his own due diligence to make sure he knows who and what his options are.
So for now, it’s just a waiting game. But we believe the Huskies may be in an enviable position at this point and, depending on where Garbers feels he himself stands with Georgia, that this could — in fact — be a Dawg fight.
Stay tuned…
