Just for fun, here’s some quick awards that really don’t amount to much, but they’re just for fun.
Best Interview
Rome Odunze
Always a great conversationalist and will be a good interviewee when he talks to the media at Washington. One thing I always appreciated about Rome was that he called back when he said he would, always responded via text — and was a perfect gentlemen. Rome is a very smart young man and I see him really taking a leadership role at Washington in the future.
Runner up: Samuel Peacock, he came on late in the process but in conversation he’s a very eloquent and well-spoken young man.
Funniest Recruit
Jay’Veon Sunday
This class was definitely a more serious class than in the past, but one guy who always made me laugh was Jay’Veon. It’s not that he was telling jokes and trying to be funny, but Jay’Veon has a great laugh and it’s the kind that makes you laugh too. The first time I heard this was when he was on his unofficial trip to Washington last spring. I called him and he picked up — I thought he was done with the trip. Turns out he still on the trip and stepped out to talk to me while he was out to dinner with his coach and Keith Bhonapha. I swear, he sounded giddy on the phone. That was when I realized he was going to Washington.
Best Photoshoot Picture
Cooper McDonald
How cool is the spider-man pose here? McDonald might seem like meek and mild but those Tab Hunter looks of his also make him Most Likely to Star in a Hollywood Movie in the future. Well done, Coop.
Runner up: Triston Brown. It’s not easy to pose as if you’re kicking the ball and actually showing the ball air born. Although this is probably more about the good eye of the photographer, but Brown played it up beautifully.
Best Twitter User
Geirean Hatchett
Hatchett was a guy who was there to pick up Husky fans after a loss with words of encouragement and hope for the future.
Runner up: Jalen McMillan took a gentle jab at Oregon once on Twitter. That’s enough to get him runner-up awards any day of the week.
Best Hair
Sam Adams
Sam has that big hair going on; he can either wear it loose or tuck it in. Finely appointed curls that are reminiscent of the late, great Prince give Adams a real edge in the hair department.
Runner up: I’m going with Sawyer Racanelli on this one. His haircut is defined and svelte. It is heart-warming to see anyone under the age of 18 still sporting that 1977 doo. Keep it real Sawyer!
Biggest Sleeper
James Smith
Smith had to spend most of his high school career backing up Trent McDuffie and Chris Steele, but this year he showed what we was all about at St. John Bosco and earned his own offers before committing to the Huskies.
Runner Up: Mason West
Best Twitter Profile Pic
Jay’Veon Sunday
To see a Texas kid standing proudly holding a Washington flag is pretty cool. You don’t see that everyday at Washington, but it’s become more commonplace at Washington since the current staff took over.
Runner up: Carson Bruener. His picture is a graphic that says “I’m staying home”, which is rather fitting considering his father played for the Huskies.
