BREAKING: Washington Adds Transfer QB Alex Johnson, Originally from Bishop Blanchet

With 5 days before the start of Spring Football, the Washington Huskies have added some experience to its quarterback room with the commitment of Alex Johnson who announced that he’s transferred from Santa Barbara City College.  He brings played in 18 games over the last 2 years for SBCC.

In the final 8 games of the season in 2022 he completed 71 of 113 passes for 783 yards with 9 TDs and 3 interceptions.  He was voted 1st Team All-California QB and the APL Offensive MVP.  After an opening season loss where he threw 3 interceptions, he sat out two games before he began to hit his stride.

The school’s press release stated about Johnson: “The APL’s Offensive Player of the Year got out to a slow start, but would bounce back to have an incredibly efficient final seven games. Quarterback Alex Johnson started hitting stride in week five of the season, when he completed 10-of-16 (.625) passes for 94 yards and ran in two scores with a season-high 46 rushing yards in a big 30-14 win at Glendale. The signal-caller would finish the year as a dual threat with six rushing touchdowns, while posting a 9-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio over the second half of the season. Johnson also completed 70 percent of his passes in three of his last five, including going a masterful 8-for-10 for three scores and a season-high 143 yards in a 63-0 win over LA Pierce.”

In his final game for Santa Barbara, he helped lead SBCC to a 44-23 victory in the Beach Bowl

Presumably a walk-on, Johnson is a 6-5, 215-pound QB who grew up in the Seattle/Bellevue area.  He prepped at Bishop Blanchet High School in Seattle.  The year before he threw for 1407 yards with a 12-7 touchdown-to interception-ratio.  It appears that he was under heavy pressure throughout the season 15 times as well, which will help to understand the number of interceptions thrown.

Johnson is the second Blanchet alumnus to join the Huskies this winter, joining former Bear offensive lineman Cole Thomas who was hired as an offensive consultant.

With Johnson likely joining the Huskies as a walk-on he gives the UW a QB with collegiate experience but Washington will enter Spring Football with just two scholarship QBs.  Other than Michael Penix and Dylan Morris, there are 3 other QBs on Washington’s roster:  red-shirt freshman Camdyn Stiegeler from Oregon City, Oregon; sophomore Tyson Lang from Glacier Peak High School in Snohomish, Washington and sophomore Teddy Purcell of Sacred Heart Prep in Menlo Park, California.

RealDawg has attempted to reach out to Johnson for comment.
