Behind the Numbers: Historic Night for Washington’s Offense

The Washington Huskies reclaimed the Apple Cup in historic fashion.  Washington QB Michael Penix led his squad to a season-high 703 yards of offense in the victory, including top two receivers, Jalen McMillan and Rome Odunze, who became the first pair of Husky pass catchers to go over 1,000 yards receiving in the same season. Odunze finished his day with five catches for 157 yards and a touchdown.

10.  The lead changed hands seven times but the Huskies but Washington scored the final 17 points in the 2nd half.  On the other side of the ball, Washington’s defense held WSU to 6 points.  On the night the Huskies had 10 explosive passing plays.

9.  The primary running backs for the Huskies, Wayne Taulapapa and Cameron Davis carried the ball 19 times for 181 yards 9.5 yards per carry.

8.  Taulapapa iced the game with a 40-yard touchdown run with 1:37 remaining.  The run was the 8th and final explosive rushing play by the Husky offense.  Before that Penix’s “lateral” from Jalen McMillan was the longest carry of the night for UW.

7.  The Huskies were leading the country in putting a 7 on the board on their first drive of the game this past season.  Penix was off-target early in the game with several overthrows.  He did lead the Huskies to 7 TDs with the third game of over 50 points.

6.  Jalen McMillan was Penix’s top target early in the game, finishing with six receptions for 150 yards.

5.  Michael Penix went 25 for 43 for 485 yards and three TDs.  Despite that he only completed 5 consecutive passes once on the night.  He sits 105 passing yards from the single-season passing yards record for a Washington QB.

4.  Washington had three passing touchdowns and 4 rushing TDs, including a 30 yarder from Penix.  His rushing TD came on a backwards pass from Jalen McMillan.  Had the pass been a yard forward the should-be-Heisman contender would have thrown for a TD, rushed for a TD and caught pass for a TD.

3.  The Washington offensive was nearly mistake-free.  The offensive line kept Michael Penix upright all night long, rarely getting touched.  They gave up no tackles for loss, including no sacks.  They were flagged for 3 penalties–two delay of game penalties and a hold by running back Cameron Davis.

2.  On 13 third down opportunities the Huskies were only able to not convert twice.  The Huskies lost the turnover battles 2-0.  However, Davis’ 3rd quarter fumble looked as though it should have been overturned.

1.  Peyton Henry had the opportunity to extend the Washington lead to a two-score game at 41-33.  However, the extra point clanked off of the left upright.  His one and only PAT miss of the season.
