Assessing Washington’s biggest needs after the transfer portal deadline

Washington still has a few open scholarships to play with for the 2022 season, and they still have some needs to fill, especially on the defensive side of the ball. With two scholarship players, running back Caleb Berry and defensive back Jacobe Covington, announcing their intentions to enter the transfer portal following the May 1st deadline, the coaching staff has two open scholarships, with the total of scholarship players on the roster currently sitting at 83.

At least one, if not both, of those scholarships, should be for a defensive tackle. The primary option to fill that scholarship should be former South Carolina DT Devontae Davis. Standing at 6’4, 300 pounds, and straight out of the SEC, the Huskies could really use his services.

“I’m looking for a place that I can play, be a key player for them, and also a place that fits me and my personality. Washington definitely fits that mold for me, for sure,” he said in an interview with 247 Sports. Pairing Davis, a former three-star prospect, alongside Tuli Letuligasenoa would do wonders for the team’s run defense, which is looking to bounce back after being one of the worst in the country in 2021.

Washington also recently extended an offer to 6’5, 255-pound defensive lineman Sekai Asoau, a junior college product of the College of San Mateo, and he’s originally from Tacoma, Washington. Asoau looks to be more of an edge at his size, and is a name that fans should definitely keep an eye on.

The other positions that could use another body are inside linebacker and wide receiver. If Edefuan Ulofoshio is able to suit up for the majority of the 2022 season, the coaching staff probably won’t go too hard after another linebacker. However, head coach Kalen DeBoer’s system could use as many receivers as it can possibly get, and there’s a name in the transfer portal fans should be pretty familiar with.

Former four-star recruit LV Bunkley-Shelton announced his intentions to transfer from Arizona State, and Washington was on his shortlist when he chose the Sun Devils out of high school. Bunkley-Shelton would be a great fit as a slot receiver in DeBoer’s system. He recently took a trip to Oklahoma, but if he wants to stay in the Pac-12, he should be one of the first calls wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard makes.
