Here’s the complete transcription of the post-game interviews with Husky head coach Jimmy Lake, Arkansas State coach Butch Jones, and Husky players.

Washington Head Coach Jimmy Lake

 Opening Statement:

I am extremely proud of our guys for continuing to grind and continuing to work. That is one of the anchors of our program, whether we are doing good and we start off 3-0, we go back to work, or whether we have some disappointing games, we have to go back to work and grow and develop. We will enjoy this one tonight, but then here we go. Tomorrow we have to get back to work. We still have a ton to improve on.

I am really proud of our offensive line, Jaxson Kirkland and Luke Wattenburg really set a tone for the way we are supposed to play football. I am very proud of Dylan Morris for the way he orchestrated that game. We had to throw the ball a little more to open up run lanes and he did that effectively. Also, very proud of our defense. Our D-line came to play, clogged up those running lanes and it was nice to see some turnovers finally. But here we go, we have to get back to work and we will tomorrow.

What does this win feel like for you and the team?

You can see it in our guys’ eyes, the joy in the fourth quarter as the time was going down. It was awesome to see all the smiles on all the players faces. Like I mentioned last week, football teaches you so much and teaches you to persevere through adversity, how to be mentally tough when everyone is telling you, you can’t do things. Our guys stayed together and stayed united, and it was awesome to see the joy in their eyes.

What answers did you find offensively today?

The momentum we had coming out of spring football and the momentum we had coming out of training camp that is what it looked like. It was awesome to see our players in positions to go out and make plays.

Would you have done anything different given the 0-2 start?

There is no question. After a win or a loss, you go back and say, ‘okay I wish I would’ve done this’. It is what it is. We are at where we are at. What I do love is that we have gone through some adversity and what we are about as a team, and I love how we responded. Sometimes you have to go through hard things to find out who we are and that is what we are doing. We are still going through adversity; we aren’t happy where we are at. We still have a lot to improve on.

With conference play coming up next week, it is a long season, but the past is the past, and we will learn from the mistakes that were made.

DB Brendan Radley-Hiles

How did you bounce back after Michigan this week?

This week all in all was attention to detail. Our details were a big thing Coach Lake harped on. This week was full of a lot of preparation, we overprepared. We wanted to make sure we knew who we were up against and executed properly.

What did that feel like to perform the way you did after two frustrating weeks?

As a team, we know who we are. The first two weeks, that was adversity. Adverse situations. And this team is full of guys that are tough that know how to deal with adversity. So really gelling together and allowing nothing to separate us, that was a big thing that our guys harp on us. So staying together.”

How did it feel for guys who didn’t start, continue to commit to scoring?

Everybody is ready. Even if you’re a backup guy you could be a starter. Everybody on this team produces at a starting level. There’s a standard that we set out in defense as a whole…that every guy that’s suited up that could go into that game can play to that level.

QB Dylan Morris

You had one addition today, Jalen McMillen, what made the difference for them?

He brings so much as a technician; he can open up the line and short space. He’s comfortable for me to throw it out there for him I know he’ll get it and the plays he made definitely brought some juice for our whole team.

What was your feeling from winning this game? Joy or relief?

I mean for everybody it was definitely joy because we’re getting closer to playing our type of football.

Arkansas State Head Coach Butch Jones

On the most frustrating part of the game:

It was just the overall discipline and execution in all three phases and the critical mistakes in critical stages and junctures in the game. We talked about having to get a fast start. We talked about the first eight minutes of the game being absolutely critical. We force a three-and-out, we drive and drop a third down pass and then we miss a field goal. We go down and it’s 4th-and-2, we knew what was coming, we were in three deep and we jump. We have to figure out why these things are happening. And again, it’s everything. When you play a quality opponent like Washington, everything is magnified. Every critical mistake you make – not being locked in, not trusting your keys, not reacting (is magnified). We have to go back and look at all that. All this is on me. I’m the head football coach. My name is on this program, I’m responsible for it. I can promise you we’re going to get it rectified, were going to get it corrected. We’re going to keep driving to do that. It’s maintaining intensity for 60 minutes, it’s discipline to execute, it’s all of the above. It’s unacceptable.

On why the team struggled against the Washington defense:

Too many three-and-outs. When you play a team like that, every dropped pass is magnified, every missed block is magnified. We had way too many dropped passes out in the perimeter. They’re momentum-type plays that we dropped. We turned the football over. You can’t do that. Our players have to understand the expectations and the standard of performance. Not just on game day, but in practice and every day. And again, that starts with me. There will be 100% clarity on what we expect and I believe in our players. We have good players. When you make mistakes against a good football team, you’re always going to be behind.

On how team moves forward from here:

We knew this schedule was top-heavy. We knew it would be a challenge. It is what it is. You have to have everyone committed. Right now, it’s still early. There’s a lot of football left to be played. The mind is a powerful thing and right now a lot of individuals on this football team are under a character check. What type of a relentless competitor are they? Are they really bought into the program? What are they willing to do to correct the deficiencies? How are we going to improve our practice habits? Really what we expect is a standard of excellence. I know our players are prideful, I know they’ll bounce back. We can have no wasted minute of the day to improve on all of our deficiencies. I have to make sure that everything is articulated and everything is practiced. We’re going to continue to demand. We’re not going anywhere. We have a high expectation for this team and for this football program and we’re not going backwards.
