“A Win is a Win”, as Washington Extends Winning Streak to 14 Games with Ugly Win Over Arizona State

“A Win is a Win”, as Washington Extends Winning Streak to 14 Games with Ugly Win Over Arizona State

Hang it in the Louvre.  Mishael Powell’s picture of his Pick-6 against Arizona State, that is, not the game.  The Huskies escaped with a 15-7 victory over the visiting Arizona State Sun Devils.

The only thing missing from Powell’s interception return was shaking cameras in old Husky Stadium.

This time the Sun Devils were trying to add to their 1-point lead, 7-6.  With 8:11 left in the game, and Washington’s offense uncharacteristically looking disjointed, it was Powell and the Washington defense to the rescue.

Powell’s interception gave the Huskies their first lead of the game at 12-7.  Arizona State is never an easy game and tonight was no different except that Washington won.  In fact, ASU is the last team to be the Huskies.

The first play of the game was a completion from Arizona State quarterback Trenton Bourguet to Omeire for 9.  It was his only reception on 7 targets as Washington Jabbar Mohammad locked the Texas-transfer.  Mohammad’s ability to shut down Omeire was symbolic of the Huskies’ defensive effort on the night holding the Sun Devils to 7 points.

Husky Stadium helped out the defense all night long after 4 turnovers by Washington’s offense and producing 3 turnovers-on-downs for the second week in a row.  Backed by the Husky faithful, Zion Tupuola-Fetui pressured incompletion off the hands of Sekai Asoau-Afoa who couldn’t hang onto the ball.

But the Husky offense wasn’t able to mount any sort of consistent pressure as Washington’s Heisman-contending quarterback threw an interception on UW’s 3rd play of the game.  Then just 12 plays later another Penix pass found the hands of a defender on a tipped ball at the line of scrimmage.

The Huskies had trouble holding onto the ball all night with two other turnovers.  At the Sun Devil 47 yard line, Penix didn’t have a clean handoff to Dillon Johnson giving ASU the ball back to the visitors.  That’s the same 47 yard line where Penix drove the Huskies for the game-winning score against Oregon seven days before.  Instead it was the Sun Devils that drove 53 yards to take a 7-0 lead.

It was the Huskies that scored the final 15 points of the game with the UW defense turning away the Sun Devils repeatedly.

Penix did lead the Huskies on 3 scoring drives but all field goals.  ASU’s kicker Dario Longhetto had a rough day missing two field goals.

In the end, the night belonged to the Husky defense and Husky Stadium, but especially Powell with his first touchdown since he was 10-years old.
