2024 NFL Draft: Former Washington QB Penix Pens Letter to NFL GMs

2024 NFL Draft: Former Washington QB Penix Pens Letter to NFL GMs

Former Washington Husky quarterback, Michael Penix penned a letter to NFL general managers, stating his case for being drafted.

He begins by posting the most frequently, asked question of him during the lead up to Thursday’s 2024 NFL Draft.

“4 season-ending injuries in 4 years, Mike. How do I reconcile that?”, he said.

That was a question nearly everyone when he first walked out of the tunnel at Husky Stadium 18 months ago.  Followed quickly by, “who’s his backup”, expecting to see a frail first stringer.

He answered that question and many more.

He answered those questions by posting more wins than any QB in those two years at Washington.

By his 6th game his assault on Washington’s record book was well underway.

The questions then became “How did he make that throw”; “How did he thread that needle?” and “Is Penix a Heisman contender?”.

In his letter to NFL GMs he stands tall in the pocket, not ducking the negativity, “Let’s get straight to it,” he began.  “Chances are this question has come up in your building. You may have even asked it yourself.”

Empathetic to their position, he stated that “Truth is, I don’t fault you for asking the question.”

He goes on to say that he was expecting his body of work to answer all of the questions itself but found in the draft process his body was the question.

“Before I got into this pre-draft process, I always felt I’d let my tape speak for me,” he continued.  “Anything anyone really needed to know about me is in the All-22. The tape shows it all, how our team responds to adversity, how we come together, how we execute. But as these four months have carried on I’ve realized there’s more to it than the All-22.”

His tape speaks for itself, but Penix felt it was time to speak for himself:

“I’m a product of Dade City, FL. Population 7,600. No Trader Joe’s, no Whole Foods. No steak houses or country clubs. No personal QB coach, no strength coach, no state-of-the-art training equipment. Nothing about Dade City is luxurious, but that‘s the way we like it. It’s a town full of pride, and a lot of our pride comes from football. We swap out summer camps for tackle football on concrete in the 95-degree heat. You find out quick if you’re built for this game or not.

I’m thankful that I grew up in…
