2022 Washington Fall Camp Day 4: QB Battle Now a Two Man Race?

2022 Washington Fall Camp Day 4: QB Battle Now a Two Man Race?

Four days into Fall Camp and Washington’s quarterback battle appears to have narrowed, with Dylan Morris perhaps slipping back a bit.

In an early 11 on 11 session on back-to-pack passes Morris threw the ball out of bounds.  However, on the third play of the sequence Washington’s starter for all but one game over the past two seasons put the ball in a spot where only his receiver had a pass-catching opportunity—and the receiver hauled it in.

The story of practice number four, however, was the pass rush that gave Penix, Huard and Morris fits.  If Jeremiah Martin wasn’t batting down passes Zion Tupuola-Fetui was flushing the QBs from the pocket or Sav’ell Smalls and Bralen Trice getting a touch sack.  Early on especially, the pressure on the passers was impressive.

As far as pecking order between the Penix and Huard, only time will tell.

When the QBs could get free, and as time wore on, they QBs understood where the pressure was coming from receivers Rome Odunze, Jalen McMillan and Ja’Lynn Polk all showed the ability to catch balls in traffic and create separation on deep balls.

On one deep ball from Huard, Polk allowed himself to get driven too deep into the endzone on a ball that was slightly underthrown.  Had he been able to hold his ground a bit more and come back for the ball it was a touchdown.  As it was, the ball fell incomplete behind the receiver and defensive back.

Finally, Giles Jackson has found a home in the soft spots of the defense.  If it’s the sideline, or on a short, chain-moving underneath route he is a sure-handed receiver that teams will have to account for.

In all, the defense had its moments and the offense had its moments–just what one would expect from Day 4 of Fall Camp.
