Washington continues to reach into the Southwest region, and an offer went out last week to Hutto (TX) 2021 Buck, Landyn Watson.
Watson, who’s 6-3, 235 told us he had received the offer via telephone, “Actually Coach Petersen got on the phone with my mom”, he said, “They wanted to let my mom know that they are recruiting me and that I have an offer.”
The Husky coaches had scouted Watson during the May evals while in Texas.
“It’s a big offer”, Watson, who currently holds 15 offers continued, “I know they put guys in the league — and I don’t mind the traveling — that distance isn’t going to be make any difference to me.”
But UW has some heavy competition as well, with Watson taking unofficials to Ohio State and this past weekend to Alabama — not to mention the Texas schools (he previously took an unofficial to Texas A&M).
Originally from Wisconsin, Watson has spent the majority of his youth now in Texas, but the Badgers haven’t come calling yet. Watson is hoping to get an offer from Ohio State, however, “They haven’t offered yet because they said they want me to build a relationship with Coach Johnson first”, he said.
But the Huskies have swooped in and are doing their due diligence to get the ball rolling and show Watson some early love, “Coach K already has my transcripts”, he said, “They just want to know that I’m a great guy on and off the field too.”
In the classroom, Watson is pulling a 3.7 GPA. On the field, he’s also getting it done.
Watson is a very athletic OLB/DE who has a strong motor, fast-twitch, power, lateral movement and sideline to sideline speed that Washington loves to see in a buck. He has a lot of aggression and his instincts and football I.Q. are right where they need to be at this point in his high school career.
Lasts season he posted 20 tackles for loss for Hutto, seven and a half sacks, and 55 total tackles.
One thing going in Washington’s favor, despite the fact that this is a Texas prospect, is that Watson feels so strongly about wanting to get to the next level and he’s already been impressed with Washington’s ability to develop talent and get guys to that level.
He said he plans to take an unofficial visit to Washington at some point — but it’s a long process and he’s still in the early stages.
