The Huskies have been fortunate to get some of the best DB’s out of Arizona the past few years, and they hope to continue that trend in 2020 with Kelee Ringo, but if you look ahead to 2021, check out Desert Edge High School DB, Steven Ortiz.
The 4-star sophomore plays for one of the top 7 on 7 teams in the country at FSP, and while they took part in competition over the weekend in Tacoma, Ortiz decided to head over to UW and take an unofficial trip.
“It was beautiful”, the 5-11, 170 lb. Goodyear, AZ. prospect told Realdawg.com, “I liked the facilities and it had an old school look to it — like Harry Potter.”
This has been said often by recruits when they first see the UW campus and the old library building and other buildings, but it was the in-person contacts made that left a noted impression on Ortiz.
He had a chance to visit with Jimmy Lake, “He said he loved my film and that they like my ball skills”, Ortiz said, “They’re coming to see me in May.”
The Huskies haven’t offered yet, but it’s not unusual due to the fact that Ortiz is still just a sophomore and they do like to watch guys in person and do all their homework, but so far, Ortiz definitely has the Huskies’ attention.
For one thing, he’s the type of guy Lake loves in the secondary; strong instincts, a ball hawk, quick-t0-learn, and the skillset to play safety or corner.
Last season Ortiz recorded five picks, “I feel like I play with a lot of confidence and energy”, he said, “I’m always going to go 110% no matter what.”
One familar face at the Dub during the unofficial was that of Arizona Husky, Dominique Hampton. The two played against each other when Ortiz was a freshman, “He was telling me about how (Coach Lake) send more DB’s to the NFL and how I can develop (if I go to Washington)”, Ortiz said.
But another big factor is that Ortiz is playing for FSP this spring, and rubbing shoulders with some of the best in the country; Kelee Ringo and Ayden Hector.
The team will travel to San Francisco next up, and then to Tampa, FLA.
Ortiz said he hopes to get back up to Washington again soon, and by May we’ll have a better idea of where things stand in terms of a possible early offer from the Huskies.
