#11 Huskies Roll Past #20 BYU, 35-7

Jake Browning has now officially left an indelible mark (at this point) on Husky Football; breaking the all-time passing record and leading the Huskies to a Top 25 victory over #20 BYU by a score of 35-7.

Jake Browning was 92% accurate with 277 total yards, and Salvon Ahmed led all rushers with 86 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns.

The Huskies got on the board early when Salvon Ahmed found a five-yard lane into the endzone after a 68-yard drive, but BYU would attempt to answer back; driving all the way down field but missing a field goal.

The Huskies fired back again when Myles Gaskin ran it in from six yards out after a 72-yard drive to start the second quarter and put the Huskies up 14-0.

BYU continued to have problems moving the chains, and Washington would take advantage again and get back to the redzone, but the a stalled-drive resulted in a missed field goal from 40 out by Peyton Henry, and BYU would take over on downs with just 22 seconds left in the half.

The Cougar running back, Lopini Katoa fumbled on third-and-fiften and Ben Burr-Kirven recovered the ball on the BYU 24. 

The Huskies would take over and score again when Jake Browning tucked and ran for nine yards, putting the Huskies up 21-0 to end the half.

Browning would go to the locker room having broken the all-time passing record.

The second half began with more of the same; BYU had possession to start the half but couldn’t get into rhythm, and that drive ended when Taylor Rapp sacked Cougar quarterback, Tanner Mangum.

Unfortunately for Mangum,  his fingers were also stepped on by Ben Burr-Kirven and Mangum was taken to the tent.

Washington would get a return to midfield by way of Aaron Fuller and drive down to score again when Jake Browning found Drew Sample in the endzone, taking the lead 28-0 with 9:31 left the third quarter. 

Taylor Mangum returned to the game for the Cougars, but the Husky defense was stout and the ball returned to Washington’s hands, where they drove down 80 yards again and scored on a Salvon Ahmed scamper from six yards out. 

The score was 35-0 to end the third quarter.

The fourth quarter didn’t bring a lot of excitement; Washington drove down and Peyton Henry missed another field goal, but late in the game BYU got the ball back after Chico McClatcher fumbled a punt return. BYU would score their only touchdown with 41 seconds left after it appeared the Husky defense might hold.

Final score: 35-7

The Huskies move to 4-1 for the season, and BYU falls to 3-2.

The Husky offensive line played their best game of the season. It appears they are finally “gelling”.

Numerous (albeit chippy) holding calls. Mostly on Kaleb McGary who was going up against 6-9 Cougar defensive end, Corbin Kaufusi. While these were overly picky calls, it’s something the coaches will need to clean up this week.

Chico McClatcher’s fumble on the punt. The Huskies would have pitched a shutout — the first time since 1990 against a ranked opponent — had it not been for this turnover.
