#10 Huskies Hold off ASU for a 27-20 Win

The Huskies were able to grind out a win over a stubborn Arizona State team, and extend their record to 3-1 for the season.

Jake Browning threw for 202 yards and three touchdowns, while Myles Gaskin added 86 yards rushing, as the Huskies held off a very threatening Sun Devil team by a score of 27-21.

The game got off to a very strange start, when the Huskies began on offense and tried a trick play involving receiver Andre Baccellia trying to throw a pass.

Unfortunately, the play failed and Baccellia threw an interception, instead.

“That was on me”, Chris Petersen would say after the game, “I wish we didn’t call it…but we’re going to take chances.”

The Sun Devils were go downfield and score the first points of the game off a one-yard run from Eno Benjamin — but the Huskies fired right back.

Washington went 80 yards on nine plays and Jake Browning found Aaron Fuller in the endzone on an 11-yard pass. ASU answered back with a field goal that put the score at 10-7 with 3:53 left in the first quarter, but Browning found Ty Jones for an acrobatic 19-yard pass for six as the Huskies took the lead, 14-10 heading into the second quarter.

The Huskies were able to gash ASU with the mix of Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed, but fell short in the redzone and settled for a 26-yard field goal from Payton Henry.

They took a 17-10 lead into the locker room for halftime.

The second half brought only field goals in the third quarter; Washington and ASU each put up three as the Huskies had a lead of 20-13 going into the fourth quarter — but then some fireworks started.

With 10;59 left in the game, Jake Browning — under heavy pursuit — threw a dart to tight end, Cade Otten in the back corner of the endzone and the Huskies would finally get up by a score of 27-13.

Arizona State wasn’t ready to just give up though — even after costly penalties and indications of frustration. With just 2:54 left on the clock, the Sun Devils took advantage of an N’Keal Harry 42-yard return and drove downfield to score on a one-yard reach by quarterback, Manny Wilkins.

Washington would go on, however, to run the clock down and put the game away.

Ben Bur-Kirven led the defense with 20 tackles.

The Huskies now go to 3-1 and 2-0 in the Pac-12, tying with Stanford who beat Oregon in overtime in Eugene.
