RECRUITING: Three Things I Think, and Three Things I Know

Tommy Togiai

We’re just a little over a month away from the first-ever early signing period for high school recruits. So let’s look at a few variables today and some facts vs. folly on the Husky recruiting trail.

What I think:

→ Washington could wind up taking a larger class than what was first anticipated. I wouldn’t bet my house on it, but there’s some rumblings that indicate five more guys might be short-changing the 2018 class. There will be a tailback, two defensive backs, three defensive linemen..but that’s six right there. Factor in some of the new offers that have gone out of late, as well as all those UCLA commits jumping? Trying to figure out how they will make the numbers work will be interesting.

→ I still think Washington lands Utah DL Sam Taimani and Cali juco DE, Caleb Tremblay. Although I’m still hearing that things are positive in the Tommy Togiai camp. I think the entire Togiai family — including Tommy — would like this entire saga to end so they can go back to normal life again before the holidays.

→ I think there may be a surprise or two coming up. Maybe a new name on the radar and another name that was forgotten (because he committed somewhere else). Washington is hot right now — and with (gulp) little spots left, this could wind up becoming much more interesting going into the early signing period than anyone initially thought.

What I know:

→ I know the coaches would like to get this class done for the most part in December and have everyone signed. And most everyone on the current commit list is set to sign, but those guys who were going to wait until February (and visit in January) may be pushing up their visit dates. December 15th is the magic weekend and I expect to see a packed house of visitors making their way to Montlake. December 9th will see a few as well.

→ I know that Utah is trying in every way to stall tailback, Richard Newton. They already postponed the Utah visit that was supposed to take place last weekend — and so he’s going this weekend. I know this is just a step for Newton, and am pretty sure he will come home and announce he’s going to Washington.

→ Lastly, I know that Julius Irvin is still in play, but look for Stephan Blaylock (UCLA) to seriously consider making a flip to Washington. I know that Kyler Gordon has seemed quiet, but he’s all business right now and my guess would be that Gordon and Blaylock round out the defensive backs class for 2018, joining Dominique Hampton who’s already committed.
